Do you need GST registration?
Begin with what you supply, where you operate and your aggregate turnover—not just the name of your business. Registration can arise from turnover or a specific compulsory-registration provision. Exemptions can also change the answer.
A conditional registration exemption, not a universal limit. Certain states, goods and mandatory-registration categories are excluded.
The lower general threshold applies in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Check the relevant supply and notification conditions.
Threshold framework: CGST Act, Section 22. Conditional goods exemption: Notification 10/2019–Central Tax, as amended. Figures are a starting point, not an individual eligibility decision.
Turnover is a PAN-level picture
Aggregate turnover is assessed across India for the same PAN. It generally includes taxable supplies, exempt supplies, exports and interstate supplies, while excluding GST and inward supplies on which tax is paid under reverse charge. It is not profit or simply the balance received into one bank account.
Check the exceptions before deciding
Interstate transactions, e-commerce, reverse charge and special taxpayer categories need closer review. Some have specific exemptions; do not apply “mandatory in every case” shortcuts. Businesses dealing exclusively in wholly exempt or non-taxable supplies should review Section 23. Voluntary registration also brings ongoing obligations.
Read the registration handbook hosted by Telangana Commercial Taxes for aggregate turnover, compulsory registration and exemptions. Obtain case-specific advice where the business model crosses categories.
GST registration documents, organised by business type.
Use this as a preparation checklist, not a request to upload documents here. The live REG-01 form determines the applicable fields, evidence, formats and file sizes.

Constitution-specific application fields: GST portal registration manual. Special entities, SEZ applicants and non-resident categories can require a different document set.
Match premises proof to how you use the property.
Do not describe a consent arrangement as ownership or a tenancy as consent just to fit a document you already have.
Owned premises
One acceptable ownership document, such as a property-tax receipt, municipal khata or electricity bill.
Rented or leased
Agreement plus acceptable ownership evidence. An unregistered agreement also requires the lessor’s identity proof under the cited guidance.
Consent-based use
Owner’s consent letter, identity proof and acceptable ownership evidence. Shared-premises arrangements need the appropriate supporting documents.
Premises guidance and special cases: CBIC Instruction 03/2025-GST.
A useful five-minute check: open every scan, check that all pages are readable, compare names and addresses, and label files clearly. Keep originals securely. Do not send Aadhaar copies, passwords or OTPs to an unfamiliar person claiming they can guarantee approval.
How to apply for GST registration.
Prepare here; submit only through the official system. This overview covers the normal taxpayer application, not every specialised registration category.
- 01
Start on the official GST portal
Open Services → Registration → New Registration. Select the appropriate applicant category and state. Keep your PAN-aligned legal name and accessible contact details ready.
- 02
Complete Part A and keep your TRN
Validate the requested contact details. The Temporary Reference Number lets you return to your draft. A TRN is not a GST number or evidence of approval.
- 03
Build the application in Part B
Use the TRN to complete business, stakeholder, signatory, premises and goods/services details. Upload the documents requested for your selected constitution and premises arrangement.
- 04
Submit and complete authentication
Use the signing method applicable to your entity. Follow the portal’s Aadhaar instructions; OTP authentication or a biometric/document-verification appointment may apply.
- 05
Track the ARN and respond if needed
Keep the Application Reference Number once generated. Monitor the official application status and any clarification notice rather than treating submission as approval.
- 06
Check the approval before using the GSTIN
Review the registration certificate, effective date, legal name and addresses. Save the official record and organise the next compliance steps before preparing your first GST invoice.
Application and authentication reference: GSTN normal-taxpayer registration manual. Follow the current screen instructions if the portal flow changes.
Understand simplified registration under Rule 14A.
The scheme introduced in November 2025 is an optional registration route for qualifying applicants. It is not a replacement for checking whether registration is required, and it is not the composition scheme.
The test concerns output tax, not turnover
The applicant self-assesses that monthly output tax on supplies to registered persons will not exceed ₹2.5 lakh, including CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and compensation cess.
Authentication remains important
The advisory requires Aadhaar authentication and provides electronic grant within three working days of ARN generation, subject to successful authentication and scheme conditions.
Consider the ongoing conditions
A second registration under this rule in the same state or UT against the same PAN is restricted. Withdrawal has conditions too. Read the full scheme before choosing it simply for speed.

GST registration fees and processing time.
Professional assistance is separate.
There is no government application fee for normal GST registration. A consultant may charge for their services; digital-signature or document-preparation costs can also be separate. Ask for an itemised quote rather than treating every charge as a government fee.
Registration does not remove later tax, filing or other compliance costs.
There is no universal approval date.
Standard processing for complete, non-risk-flagged applications under the cited CBIC guidance.
The verification route described in that guidance for specified risk/authentication cases.
Clarifications and verification affect the process. These are conditional procedural timeframes, not a promise from GSTVibe. The Rule 14A route above has its own conditions.
Processing reference: CBIC registration instructions. A REG-03 clarification generally requires a REG-04 reply within seven working days; check the actual notice and applicable rules.
TRN, ARN and GSTIN are three different milestones.
Resume the draft
Temporary Reference NumberUse it to return to the application you are preparing. It is not your registration.
Track the application
Application Reference NumberUse the official portal’s Services → Registration → Track Application Status option.
Identify the registration
Goods and Services Tax Identification NumberUse the issued GSTIN with the official approval record. Then check the public-facing business details.
When checking status, read the action required—not just the colour of a badge. “Pending for clarification” calls for attention; an acknowledgement alone does not mean the application has been approved.

Your first steps after getting a GST number.
Review the certificate
Check the entity, effective date and premises. Save a secure copy and give access only to people responsible for your records.
Complete bank details
For registrations covered by Rule 10A, furnish bank details within 30 days of grant or before GSTR-1/IFF, whichever is earlier. Do not leave this until your first filing deadline.
Prepare the billing workflow
Confirm applicable invoice requirements, numbering, tax treatment and item classifications before using a template. Do not assume a saved format makes every transaction compliant.
Assign compliance ownership
Decide who keeps invoices, reviews returns and monitors notices. Keep a calendar appropriate to your taxpayer category and verify due-date changes on the official portal.
Bank-account requirement: GST portal non-core amendment guidance. Failure to provide required details can affect registration and filing.
Check the GSTIN. Organise the next step.

GST registration FAQs.
Is a GST number the same as a company registration number?
No. GST registration identifies a taxpayer for GST purposes; incorporation establishes a company or LLP. Do not substitute a CIN, LLPIN, PAN or Udyam number in a field asking for GSTIN. Keep these records labelled separately in your business files.
Is the ₹40 lakh GST registration limit available to every business?
No. The higher exemption is conditional and concerns eligible exclusive suppliers of goods. The state, goods supplied and compulsory-registration provisions matter. A business supplying services should not automatically use that limit. Check the eligibility section and the linked notification before relying on a number.
Can I apply for GST registration myself?
You can use the official portal directly. If you appoint a professional, agree the scope and charges first and retain access to your own contact details, application references and certificate. GSTVibe provides guidance only; it does not submit applications or collect registration documents.
Can a freelancer or a home-based business need registration?
Yes, depending on the activity, turnover, location and applicable rules. A business label such as freelancer does not by itself settle the question. Check eligibility first, then use premises documents that truthfully reflect where the business operates and the right to use that address.
Do online sellers always need a GSTIN?
Do not rely on a blanket yes or no. E-commerce registration rules have category-specific exemptions and conditions. Review the goods or services, interstate activity, turnover, operator requirements and the current notification applicable to your selling model before starting.
Does an ARN mean my registration is approved?
No. An ARN identifies an application for tracking. Check the official status and approval record before representing the business as registered. Keep draft, acknowledgement and approval documents in separate folders so they cannot be confused.
What should I do if a clarification is requested?
Read the notice in the official portal, note its response deadline and address each point with the relevant evidence. Keep the submitted response and acknowledgement. Do not assume that uploading a new document somewhere else answers a formal notice.
Can GSTVibe issue or download my registration certificate?
No. Use your authenticated GST portal account for your certificate. Our public GSTIN search is useful for checking available business details, but it is not a substitute for the official registration record or a guarantee of approval.
What if my business operates in more than one state?
Review the registration requirement for each state from which taxable supplies are made. Do not assume that one GSTIN covers every establishment nationwide. At the same time, do not assess the turnover threshold separately for each branch: the aggregate-turnover framework is PAN-based across India.
Will registering automatically make every purchase eligible for ITC?
No. Registration and credit eligibility are different questions. Review the applicable ITC conditions, documents and restrictions separately. A supplier’s active GSTIN or a matching invoice alone does not establish your entitlement to claim credit.
