01 / Choose the right starting point

Goods and services have different classification paths.

For goods

HSN: Harmonised System of Nomenclature

HSN groups goods into structured classifications. Begin with what the product is, what it is made of and how it is used—not just the wording chosen for a sales catalogue.

  • Keep technical specifications nearby.
  • Compare the full description, not one keyword.
  • Check the level of detail required for reporting.
For services

SAC: Services Accounting Code

SAC classifies services under GST. Start with the activity actually delivered to the customer. The supplier’s industry label may be broader than the service on a particular invoice.

  • Use the scope of work or contract as context.
  • Distinguish separate activities where relevant.
  • Review bundled supplies before assuming a code.

The GST registration workflow provides separate goods and services code selections: official registration guide.

02 / Connect the code to the business

GSTIN answers “who?”
HSN/SAC answers “what?”

A GST number and a classification code belong in the same business review, but they are not interchangeable. An active registration does not establish that every item on an invoice has been classified correctly.

Check a business registration

Registration → identify the party

Compare the full GSTIN, legal or trade name and relevant registration details with your supplier documents.

Classification → describe the supply

Review the item or service on its own merits. Different supplies from the same registered business may need different codes.

Invoice → bring the checks together

Match the party details, line-item descriptions, classifications and independently verified tax treatment before relying on the document.

03 / A practical search journey

From a description to a reviewed code.

  1. 01

    Describe what is actually supplied

Start with a plain-language description. For goods, record the material, function and relevant specifications. For services, describe the work and deliverables. A brand name or a broad label such as ‘consulting’ may leave important details out.

  2. 02

Search by description or a known code

Use the directory above to search a product or service description, complete code or code prefix. Narrow your results to goods or services. Try a more precise description if the results are too broad, and cross-check candidates on the official GST portal.

  3. 03

    Read the complete entry

Compare the candidate description with the actual supply. Keep related headings, exclusions and explanatory material in view. A similar keyword is a lead to investigate, not a final classification decision.

  4. 04

    Verify the applicable tax treatment

Check the relevant rate notification, effective date, exemptions and conditions separately. For uncertain or bundled supplies, seek a qualified classification review before using a code in live billing.

  5. 05

    Keep a consistent, traceable record

Save the selected code with its description, source and review date in your item or service master. Compare it with the invoice and reporting records, and revisit the entry when the supply or applicable rules change.

04 / See the connection in practice

One supplier. More than one thing to check.

Illustrative example · not a classification ruling

A business sells equipment and provides maintenance.

The buyer checks the supplier’s GST number to review its identity. The accounts team then examines the equipment and maintenance descriptions, rather than assigning a code based only on the supplier’s name.

Where supplies are bundled, their treatment needs a separate review. This example does not prescribe a code, rate or invoice split.

Who is supplying?
The GSTIN connects the document to the intended tax registration.
What is being supplied?
Product specifications and the service scope support classification research.
What should be recorded?
The reviewed classification and tax treatment, with supporting sources and consistent document details.
05 / Keep the records connected

Carry the same understanding through your workflow.

Invoice preparation

Use meaningful line-item descriptions and review the required classification detail. Avoid copying a historic code without checking whether the current supply is the same.

Common questions, clearer answers

Before you use a code.

Can I find an HSN or SAC code from a GST number?

A GSTIN identifies a registration; it does not encode the classifications of everything that business supplies. Registration information may provide context, but classify the actual product or service rather than deriving a code from the GST number.

Can one GST number be associated with several codes?

Yes. A registered business can supply different goods or services. Keep classifications at the appropriate item or service level instead of treating one code as a universal label for the company.

Does a matching code confirm the GST rate?

Not on its own. Read the applicable notification and its conditions for the supply and date. This page does not assign rates, determine exemptions or provide a binding classification opinion.

What if the official lookup finds no result?

Check the spelling, use a more specific trade description and compare the terminology used in the official classification. Do not invent a code or choose an unrelated result just to complete a form.

How many digits should I use on an invoice or return?

The required level of detail depends on the applicable reporting rules and context. Check current invoice requirements and return validations for your business; a broad heading found in a search is not necessarily enough for the field you are completing.

Can I calculate GST after checking the classification?

Yes—once you have independently confirmed the applicable rate. Our calculators work with the rate you enter; they do not decide which rate or classification is legally correct for your supply.
